August.
It’s your time to shine Sydney.
Sydney marathon is the next major – and I’ll be there with RMA flags and a megaphone. We have been very lucky and I have some giveaways that I am bringing with me so we would love to see some of you in Hyde Park on the 30th to help us with the cheer squad.
I am also staying next door to Hyde Park, so if there is anything you would like to order from the RMA store and have free shipping – Use the code THEWINNERISSYDNEY
I will then bring it with me and we can arrange pick up from the hotel from the 28th (afternoon) to the 31st (morning) The code is live now, but you might want to wait until the new stock is in.
I have been very fortunate to have run Sydney twice, the ‘hot year’ as 2023 has been nicknamed and then in 2025 – it’s first year as a major, using my guaranteed spot for running in 2023. And I know there are many RMA running this year, many from SA too !! Good Luck to you all.
This year, for the first time in a long time, I’ll be standing on the sidelines, not the start line. I am genuinely excited to experience it from a completely different perspective – I’m not even volunteering which is usually the other thing I am doing at an event if not running. There is no FOMO here, just appreciation and a great buffet breakfast to start the day. Running a marathon is an extraordinary achievement, but so is recognising that you don’t have to be participating in every event to still feel connected to it. There is something special about cheering from the sidelines, watching months of training, determination, nerves and dreams unfold with every runner who passes by. A marathon isn’t just an event you run, it’s an event you experience, whether you are wearing a bib or waving a flag or ringing a cowbell. I’ll be celebrating every familiar face, every familiar tshirt and visor 😉, every first timer and every finish line smile, and I can’t wait to soak up the atmosphere that makes race day one of the most inspiring days.
For those that live in Sydney, make sure you tell your friends – especially the ones that don’t run – to come out on the day and watch these amazing runners, a lot can be learned from watching people doing incredible things. Sydney does not have the most conducive finish line spectator spots, but screaming at strangers anywhere along those last 10kms will absolutely help anyone visiting the pain cave. After running London this year I have experienced what running a marathon that is lined with cheer squads from start line to finish line can be like. I have also experienced long and lonely marathons – make Sydney amazing, let the locals know we are coming. The runners already know we are coming, tell the non runners to buckle up and watch the show unfold. And yell – loudly – and intentially – to everyone running past. They’ll see joy, grit, determination, happy tears (and some others!) questionable running form in the final kilometres and enough high fives to last a lifetime. Sometimes the greatest reminder of why we love this sport comes not from running the marathon, but from watching thousands of ordinary people achieve something truly extraordinary.
You may even covince a non runner to join you at parkrun the following week.
Keep an eye in the Facebook group the week before Sydney and I will tell you where Katie and I will be, it would be lovely to meet some of you for the first time, some of you again and have a chat together.
I love reading about your adventures, seeing your photos and learning your stories, please don’t stop sharing them. Share them on the private group on facebook or remember to tag @runningmumsaustralia on Instagram so I can also share your stories to the wider RMA community.
