Perhaps your new here and your wondering what this running thing is all about. Perhaps you have been running for a while and you want to get better at it but are not sure how to go about it? Perhaps you have been running forever. Well you started somewhere didn’t you? This is what Running Mums Australia is all about. Sharing the experience, the highs, the lows and the lessons that we have all learned on the journey.

Running can be hard, it can be fun and it can be rewarding. Running brings something different to every one of us. The most important thing to remember is that what it brings to you will be different to what it brings to someone else.

Here are some things to think about when taking that first step into running:

Remember why you started (or are starting) and keep your eyes on the prize, the goal ahead. It might be that you want to run 1km. 5km, or even a marathon. It might be that you want to increase your fitness, raise money or set yourself a challenge. Whatever it is, remember why you started.

Keep your expectations realistic. Lets face it, you are not going to go out and run a marathon next week when you are just starting out. If you are a busy mum, make sure you assess your time and what works for you and your family. Start somewhere and build up from there. Remember everyone starts somewhere….

Just get out there. Running can hurt, it can be hard, it can make us heave and it can bring us joy. Whatever your day brings, just get out there and learn from it. Let it be the best part of your day. Just you and the pavement.

Invest in some quality running shoes. This is a must. Do NOT go out and buy a pair of cheap shoes if you plan on doing long distant running. Go to a good running store and have them do a gait analysis and invest in a  decent pair of shoes that will help you on your journey. Remember to look after your feet and they in turn will look after your running. A good shoe can take you a long way. A poor shoe can have you on the sidelines for a long time.

Find some running buddies. We all know that sometimes it is just easier to be motivated when others are helping push you along. When the alarm goes off at 5am its always easier knowing that someone is out the front waiting for you to hit the road. Friends help us go further, they spur us on and to be honest, its more fun when you can share your achievements with those who understand where your coming from!

Mix up your training. Don’t run the same track all the time, try and mix up your distance, run alone or with friends, run fast, run slow, run hills, run in water, run fun runs and run trails. Keep it FUN. Keep it interesting and believe me you will keep running.

Join a running club or group or find a mentor. Running clubs will help you make friends with like minded runners. They will most certainly give you people that can push you in training and give much needed advice. If running with groups isn’t your thing, learn from someone who is better than you. Don’t be afraid to ask them for advice. Ask them to take you for a run and give you some tips for training. A mentor is an invaluable tool to have.

Make sure your technique is right. Invest in a workshop or session with someone who can assess your technique. Making sure that you are running correctly will not only inhibit injuries but it will help aid your success when it comes to chasing those much wanted PBs!
